SurfAid -
“……..a non-profit organization dedicated
to the alleviation of human suffering through community-based
health programs” (SurfAid.org)
SurfAid are a non-profit aid relief organisation that
strives to improve the health conditions of people living
in secluded regions located across Indonesia. With offices
established across New Zealand, USA and Australia, SurfAid’s
expansion over the last few years has ultimately increased
their capacity to extend assistance in much needed areas.
As
a part of SurfAid’s commitment in continuing to
improve the health among the Mentawai community in Indonesia,
preparation has begun to implement a life saving Community
Based health program that will eradicate life threatening
diseases such as Malaria – a major killer of young
children. The main objective of this operation is to train
and educate the local community on better health care
practices, with the aim of reducing the alarming rate
of mortality occurring at this very moment.
The proposed Community based health project will prove
to be SurfAids largest development yet. A considerable
measure of planning and organisation will be required
to successfully execute this operation in Indonesia. Once
again PSA Project Aid will play a major role in assisting
SurfAid prepare and achieve their intended project goals.
Since
September 2005, PSA Project has provided support and oversight
across a range of SurfAid’s programs and this year
increased our commitment to the provision of a full time
staff member to advise and oversee the delivery of all
programs, as well as assisting with financial and compliance
requirements.
Recently PSA conducted workshops with SurfAid’s
Executive Management Team to improve their overall management
systems and understanding of effective project control.
The workshops aimed to improve skills and allowed PSA
to extend their expertise in developing tutorials that
covered a diverse range of effective project management
lifecycle activities.
Tutorials provided guidance in:
• Assistance with programming in Microsoft Project
• Applying best practice Project Management methodology
along with the application of monitoring and evaluation
techniques to ensure projects remain on track
• Alternative approaches in overcoming cultural
differences, eg Language barriers and positive contributions
in sanitation measures
• Training in Microsoft Visio to map out project
processes
• Utilising PSA’s online project path software
to manage their various projects
• Improve and expand their governance and management
systems
As a result of PSA Project Aid’s contribution,
we have equipped SurfAid with the practical tools to ensure
the successful completion of their intended health care
management goals in Indonesia.
