| The
Accidental Project Manager
[From newsletter August
2002]
The benefits and savings involved in project preparation are still
consistently misunderstood in the workplace, according to a recent
independent survey of Project Managers. According
to an independent survey1 performed worldwide on 1,867
workplace executives, ‘Accidental project managers’
are an increasing phenomenon in the workplace with almost 2/3 of
employees in project manager roles professing to a lack of qualifications
or training in the area, having
found themselves in the job of managing a project without any experience.
The strategic void that is so often filled by ill-equipped ‘accidental
project managers’ can cost a company large sums of money in
incomplete projects and failed deadlines. It is not surprising that
58% of the surveyed project managers agreed that their projects
rarely meet time and cost targets.
So how can these figures be improved
in your organisation? How can you reap the competitive advantage
gained with consistent project success? With the use of solid Project
Managment (PM) aids that allow your staff to empower themselves
with project management methodology -
Your Project
Path.
‘methodology:-
1. the study of the methods used in a particular subject
2. A body of practices, procedures, and rules used by those who
work in a discipline or engage in an inquiry; a set of working
methods ’ |

Project Management Methodology is increasingly accepted worldwide
as a crucial guideline for projects of any size, duration or budget,
and that is the reason business is outlaying large sums for PM integration
in their organisation. Your Project Path is a project
management aid for either the experienced or accidental Project Managers
that enables cohesive integration of your projects and team process.
Guidance through key project stages in logical succession provides
your project team with the opportunity to construct realistic project
expectations, constraints and goals (which is ultimately the first
step to achieving them). Difficult decisions which may be prolonged
or inadvertently avoided will arise early in the project development
so they can be analysed and dealt with accordingly. The risk of unexpected
results can be avoided and project fate won't be in the hands of Murphy's
Law. This system has been used for years as an educational tool,
adopted from 32 years of successful experience in implementing project
management and based on accepted worldwide learning that ensures your
projects are as well defined and planned as possible.
'plan:-
1. A scheme, programme or method worked out beforehand for the accomplishment
of an objective.' |

As the project stages are defined, planned and implemented, the information
can be communicated (online or in the form of auto-reports) and retrieved
from any internet enabled PC since it is stored in a central project
database. The result is exceptional flexibility, communication and
alignment throughout the project team with the goals of the company.
The process increases transparency and understanding of the project
for stakeholders, resources, and most importantly, the project managers.
If control is the key, communication essential and the goals imperative
then Your Project Path will take you down the trail of strongest
foundations. The combination of a complete project management
course into a proven online strategy enables your organisation to
learn and benefit from the skill transfer throughout your company
ranks. Although PM procedures are common company routine, very few
assist in the development of your project. The self-paced nature
of Your Project Path makes learning easy and thoroughly enhances
project analysis.
